About the Watercolors: This was started to create a 30 day challenge for myself during a month when both of my kids were at camp, and one of them was at sleepaway camp. I'm an avid, but fumbling gardener, and decided that this was a great subject to extend my plein air painting interest, tie in my watercolor discipline, establish some mindfulness through my art and get an opportunity to experience my garden beyond tending it. Over the course of 49 days, I completed 30 watercolors featuring various aspects of my backyard garden in West Orange, NJ. I watched the garden change from it's July glory to its mid-August state of mostly spent flowers and yellowing leaves. Seeing the watercolors now, I can observe a shift from pure observation to invention.
“A garden is a grand teacher. It teaches patience and careful watchfulness; it teaches industry and thrift; above all it teaches entire trust.”
Gertrude Jekyll
Three different peeks at the same garden bed in my yard. I was without a plan as to how I would structure these every day and started out day 1 a bit ambitious. Going forward, only one watercolor was completed per day, as this particular one took up more time than I could allocate daily. This was painted between 9 - 10am, just as the sun was peaking over my neighbor's house, creating these beautiful contrasts in both hue and value. The garden became bathed in a magical light. Early July - the flowers were just starting to bloom.
