A Wedding Cake Portrait for a
Fashion Designer
Fashion Designer
This painting is a synthesis developed after pouring over the many photos by photographer, Michael Shumann, that fashion designer and sewing teacher, Leana Lu shared with me to get her Wedding Cake Portrait started. She and her husband married in St. Petersburg at the Don Cesar Hotel in 2006; the salmon background a nod to the facade of the hotel. The chartreuse fabric draped behind the cake and pinned to the dark green fabric by the orchid bouquet is part of the bustle from Leana's dress. She designed, fabricated, and wore her own wedding dress, in those dramatically lush colors. The cake, created by Publix, is donned with lemons from Florida (Leana's home state) and topped with Double Happy (a nod to her husband's heritage), a symbol used often in Chinese weddings.
This tour de force was a labor of love over about eight months. I'm honored to have gotten to know the couple very well, and since our meeting, Leana and I have become friends. Below are just a few shots of the very rudimentary beginnings of this oil painting. |
