A magical portion of a tree, spotted in Utah, painted in brilliant blues and grounded in earthy browns and ochres. Painted initially as a demonstration piece showing the effects of watercolor and ink on Yupo paper. I've been exploring the substrate of Yupo, which is a recycled plastic that allows the watercolor to sit on top of the surface and pool in ways that traditional paper will not allow. It requires patience and letting go of some control, but creates brilliant luminosity and textures.
The subject in this painting is a tree that we saw in Utah at a rest stop along I-70, somewhere East of route 89, headed towards Moab. I believe it was the Salt Wash View Area. We had driven almost 8 hours with the kids along a scenic byway, and got out right at sunset to use the facilities and stretch. There was this magnificent tree that I photographed in dusk that captured my attention, and has since started seeping into my works.
