Three of my works were selected for FRAMED, work that speaks to home, shelter, neighborhood, family, Durham, migration, rootedness, or the act of making. FRAMED is the first art show fundraiser in Habitat for Humanity of Durham’s history. One evening. Local work on easels throughout the room. Soft music, a bar, hors d’oeuvres, and a room full of people who come out because they believe a home is a foundation for everything else. 30% of every sale goes directly into building and repairing homes in this city, while 70% goes to support the artists. Durham’s artists were invited to help Habitat for Humanity put something on those walls and to help them build the next ones. Please join me!

One of my recent pieces is included in “Artspace’s biennial fundraising exhibition and celebration of NC artists from the Mountains to the Coast,” according to their website. The survey is open to all entries, including over 300 NC artists. In October, Lia Newman will review all of the works in the show and make selections for the juried show starting on 10/29.

Art selected for this exhibit is EPHEMERAL - captures something temporary, fleeting, changing, or meant to disappear. Three paintings of mine were accepted, including “Carolina Wren Taking a Seat on Me,” a new piece completed since my stroke in 2025. Before my surgery, I dreamt of birds flying out of my skull. During early recovery at home, I kept seeing a Carolina Wren outside my window, and I was learning to read the CT and MRI images of my own brain. The two came together in this mixed media. Having researched the wren's symbolism, I now see it as a bird that gave me comfort and purpose, a small, resilient creature that sings loudly and keeps going. The bird disappears, the moment after surgery changes and heals - both are temporary in many ways. My inclusion in this show delights me - it’s TWO first times - sharing this pivotal artwork and exhibiting at Little House Art Gallery!

Five of my paintings are featured amongst over 60 artists and 150 artworks, including painting, sculpture, mixed media, ceramic and installation. Durham Art Guild supports this important exhibition that centers the creative practices of artists who are also caretakers—parents, children of aging parents, healthcare workers, educators, therapists and many others. I’m returning to Durham Arts Council as a faculty member this fall, and submitted three paintings to be joined by students who I’ve taught in the past, prior to my stroke. Our House is a beautiful theme creating a metaphor for the DAC. The paintings that I selected were developed in early 2020, during the wildfires of Australia and I was thinking about the symbol of home represented by the comfort of a womb chair.
